Chocolate Crispy Treats

Chocolate-Crispy-TreatsCrispy treats are arguably the easiest dessert in the world to make. Simply melt the butter and marshmallows, add the cereal, let harden, and you’re done! Of course, like any good treat, there are many ways to customize them too. One of my favorite ways to elevate crispy treats is to add chocolate. The addition of bittersweet chocolate and cocoa powder brings so much more flavor, yet it doesn’t make the recipe any harder. I love the white chocolate drizzle on top, but it is totally optional. I personally find these seasonally appropriate as well – how lovely would these look with some Halloween-themed sugar cookies? Yum! :)

Chocolate Crispy Treats Adapted from Hannaford’s

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cups marshmallows
  • 8 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped {or 1 1/4 cups chocolate chips}
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups crispy rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
  • 4 oz white chocolate, chopped fine {or 3/4 cup white chocolate chips}

to make

  1. Melt butter in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add marshmallows, and melt, stirring for about one minute.
  2. Stir in the chocolate, cocoa, and salt, and continue to cook until both the marshmallows and chocolate melt completely, about two more minutes.
  3. Remove from heat, and add in the rice cereal. Gently stir into the marshmallow mixture until fully coated.
  4. Grease a 9-inch by 13-inch baking pan. Scoop the mixture into the pan, and press into an even layer.
  5. Next, put the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave for one minute. Continue to melt the chocolate in thirty-second intervals afterwards until fully melted and smooth.
  6. Pour the chocolate in a sandwich sized zip-close bag, and squeeze to one bottom corner. Snip the corner with scissors to create a handmade pastry bag! :)
  7. Pipe chocolate in the desired design. Let chocolate cool before cutting into bars.
  8. Enjoy!

Have a wonderful day!
