Pros & Cons / The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord

Hi!

Pros and ConsI regret never publishing my review of Emery Lord’s debut, Open Road Summer, last June. Following two best friends on one’s summer country tour, the novel is a strong showing of close friendships, an adorable, if drawn-out, romance, and the music industry; I read it, loved it, and proceeded to wait anxiously for Lord’s next release, The Start of Me and You. Fortunately, her newest novel didn’t disappoint – I loved it just as much, if not more, so than her first. In my effort to remedy my “reviewer’s remorse” from last year, I won’t wait any longer to share my thoughts. The full review is below!

Following her pitch-perfect debut Open Road Summer, Emery Lord pens another gorgeous story of best friends, new love, & second chances.

Brimming with heartfelt relationships and authentic high-school dynamics The Start of Me and You proves that it’s never too late for second chances.

It’s been a year since it happened — when Paige Hancock’s first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for two years, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school… and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her — the perfect way to convince everyone she’s back to normal. Next: Join a club — simple, it’s high school after all. But when Ryan’s sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team {of all things!} her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live? {Goodreads}

The Start of Me and YouNeed more convincing? Here’s what other reviewers had to say.
“If your jam is contemporary YA, Emery Lord is where it is at. Jump on that bandwagon early because I know Emery Lord’s popularity is just going to grow more and more. I loved her debut Open Road Summer and this sophomore novel solidifies Emery Lord as one of my favorites already” {read the rest of the review at The Perpetual Page-Turner HERE}.

The Start of Me and You was, simply, utterly fantastic. There are definitely some sadder undertones to the book, but just as with Open Road Summer, it’s ultimately a story about love and loss – and maybe most importantly, the ones who get you through it. ” {read the rest of the review at Fiction Freak HERE}.

“Lord also created a beautiful and sacred friendship between four young women who stuck by each other through thick and thin. Tessa, Morgan, Kayleigh and Paige were so fully developed as individual characters, each girl was unique and separate from each other, but they all come together to form an unbreakable bond” {read the rest of the review at What Sarah Read HERE}.

Let’s discuss! Have you picked up Open Road Summer or The Start of Me and You before? Are you an Emery Lord fan? Finally, for those who have read her sophomore novel, did you also adore Paige’s obsession with organization?! She and I are practically kindred spirits :)

Have a terrific Thursday!

  1. […] Finally, I had a feeling Emery Lord would become a beloved author of mine when I read her debut, Open Road Summer, in 2014, but it was her sophomore release, The Start of Me and You, that confirmed her spot on my auto-buy list. I think I best stated my thoughts on the adorable contemporary in my review: “There are no flaws to list; this novel is utter perfection.” Does it get any better than that? I think not. {review} […]
